FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR MOVERS

There are boxes all around the living room. Now if you can only find the packing tape. You haven’t even looked at all the stuff in the garage yet. There is an excitement in the air about the big move. This is a change for the good in your life. You’re moving to a new home, but there also are so many things to get done and so many questions.

Moving can be stressful with so many things to think about before the movers come to your home. What questions to ask a moving company can be so important,
so here are five questions to ask before you decide which moving company to use.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS

There are so many moving companies out there, one of the first things to do is ask the moving company where there business is located. Make sure they have a physical location and not just a website.

A trusted moving company will be able to tell you how long they have been in business. You also can read reviews online.

The moving company should be able to provide you with a date-range for your move. And the most important thing: they should come to your home to look at what you have to provide a quote, or do a virtual walk-through with you and your phone camera.

Make sure to also ask about their cancellation policies. Remember, moving companies will not charge you until your items are delivered to your new home.

WHAT WILL THE FINAL COST BE?

When looking for moving companies in the Las Cruces area be sure to find out what the final cost will be. This is why we say to have an in-person or on-camera walk-through of your home. Surprises are great, but you don’t want any when it comes to your move!

One of the biggest scams in the moving industry is when a moving company collects your items, then holds them hostage to negotiate a price. Make sure you get the final cost in writing before they arrive. The Better Business Bureau receives 13,000 complaints each year about moving companies; do your research online first so you aren’t one of those 13,000 people.

Most moving companies charge by weight, so find what the fees are and ask about any additional fees that will be part of your move. There should be a price on any packing, moving and valuation.

Use a credit card to pay for your move, just in case there are any problems.

WHO WILL DO THE PACKING?

This is a big one to remember. All moving companies should be able to give you a packing price. The moving company may not cover any damage of items you’ve packed. Make sure there is only one fee for packing. If you do some of the packing, ask if those items are insured.

IS YOUR MOVER ACCREDITED?

The most important thing in this move is to not get ripped off. Ask if the moving company is accredited, and make sure they are licensed and insured.

Ask if the moving company is licensed to move between states. They should be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

HOW MUCH DOES VALUATION COST?

When researching the best New Mexico movers reviews, make sure to find out about the cost of valuation, which is essentially the insurance protection on your possessions.

There are two things to look at:

  • Full Value Protection

This is the most expensive option, but will cover everything in the move.

  • Waiver of full replacement

This covers some cost about 60 cents per pound. But that doesn’t quite cover the cost if they are moving a couch.

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • Read your moving documents. Every line. And GET EVERYTING IN WRITING.
  • Be there when they pack your items and for delivery.
  • Notify your mover if something has changed and find out what the cancelation policy is.
  • Pay the company with a credit card.
  • File any claims for damages quickly.
  • Relax, you now have done your research.
